I was shooting the other day to see how my reloads were dong. I was having to shoot over a burn pile. It is a tree that the last storm took half the tree down and hasn't dried enough to burn yet. Because of all the rain I am wondering if it ever will dry out.
My point is there was some small sticks sticking up. I didn't give them any thought. After shooting two strings I went to check targets because I wasn't seeing where the bullets were hitting. I didn't set up the spotting scope. On one side of the target I had a nice group of about .75". Not great but still not bad. Then on the other side of the target I must of had a 12", I don't know what to call it. It wasn't a group or string. They were just all over the place.
On the way back up to the bench I was wondering what had happened when I started looking at the burn pile wondering when I would be able to burn it. I noticed some branches that had been sticking up were now laying over. I had hit the little stick up branches( maybe the largest was 3/8"round at most) and they deflected the bullets.
I have fired a 358 Winchester through a bush to kill a deer and it hit the spot I was aiming at. There was no deflection on that shot. Then that was a 358 200 gr bullet and not a 6.5 123 gr one.
I am glad it happened when I was just shooting at targets. I was not aware that it would deflect on such small twigs. I will have to keep that in my thoughts when hunting.
Have any of you had a bullet deflect like that?
