    scope for new grendel

Just finished a 18" grendel upper. Debating on a scope setup. The primary purpose of the gun is a hunting rifle. With that in mind the goal was light weight. I used a AA 18" fluted barrel with a PSA keymod rail and receiver. Upper come in at 4.2 lbs so I was happy about that ordered the Aero precision 1" mount figuring I would add a redfield revolution 2x7 on the upper. But my mind has been wondering to the leupold vx- hog.

Question is has anyone used both the 1x4 and 2x7 scopes on their guns? Which do you prefer. The 1x4 is somewhat appealing as the gun will also be a plinker, shtf and target weapon as well but primarily will be a hunting gun. Which scope will best fill all these needs? Thanks in advance for any advice!

The 1-4 has a reticle that is thick for my tastes.

The fine duplex illuminated with thin floating cross is better on the 2-7x.

I have the Leupold 1x4 on my 5.56 upper. I like it a lot. My eyes are good out to about 300 yards. I shot a javelina at 200 with it. I think a good scopemount is in order too.

I have used both on grendels with 18" barrels for hunting. The answer like always is it depends. It depends mostly on the quality of the glass-and how well the shooter sees. Some people see much better than 20/20 so for them they can make a 4x stretch way out. But generally I like the 2-7 better for hunting as I only have 20/20 vision. I dont see the need for a 1x to help me be accurate at 20 feet but the 7x will take me out to 280 yards or so. And I do so love a illuminated dot in the crosshair.

I came to this conclusion when I got my 2-7. Pretty good scope for the money. It's bounced between a couple rifles but I haven't put it on an ar.

The hog 1X4 pig plex reticle will be nice for hunting. On the range it is tough to get a group as good as the rifle is capable of shooting because you can't discern a fine aiming point due to combination of thick reticle and low magnification.

Either will work fine - is is a matter of personal preference. Looking at both side by side should go a long way to helping you decide.

I have a 1-4x SWFA that I plan on mounting to my 16" Anderson barrel. Depending how it shoots, I may end up swapping the 3-9x40 VXR Patrol from my 18" 5.56. When AA decides to ship the ELander magazines, I'll be able to shoot it and share my observations.

Just assembled a stainless steel, 24" upper receiver onto my home-built lower. I have mounted a 4 - 12 Nikon with duplex reticle using a Nikon one-piece mount. This will be a cardboard killer only so the weight is not an issue. Hopefully, I can get to the range next week for zeroing.

I have a Leupold VX-R 2-7x that I bought mostly due to it being lighter than most in it's class. I've never been a fan of Leupold scopes, but this one has impressed the hell out of me.

My 16" has a 1-6x on it, the 20 has a 2-10x and the 24" has a 6-24X. Lots of hogs around here so the lower power scopes make hog chasing much better ( higher magnification can create a motion-sickness-like condition when the hogs are running ). When evaluating loads on any of them ( or other MSR's ), I put the 6-24x on which ever I am evaluating. Both of the lower power scopes are first-focal plane so the reticle scales with magnification and all are 30mm,

Which 1-6x do you have that is ffp? Vortex new viper pst gen 2 that i was looking at is sfp bummer. They tried to tell me on the phone lower power scopes shouldn't be ffp but I'm a believer in a moa or mil reticle always being exactly that.

The 1-6x is a Sightmark. I have a Pulsar night vision ( I/R ) that I sometimes swap out for hogging.

It's just a duplex, but with the firedot in the center.
