    Got a chuckle

I watch a lot of videos on YT, and here lately found some older videos about our beloved Grendel.
Last night I watched one I got a chuckle out of because the hunter was talking about his Grendel and made the comment that the Grendel is a hunting round.
Now I know that this round was intended as a replacement for the 556 (and should have been adopted) but I thought what a misinformed person this was.
    Am I wrong?

Bill saw the success of 6.5 Grendel dependent upon its ubiquity as a good whitetail and hog-hunting cartridge very early-on, especially with the ease of being able to order a complete upper and drop it onto your existing AR-15 lower.

He took it to the Blackwater shoot in 2003, where it was officially unveiled. But Arne Brennan had been doing competitive shooting with 6.5 PPC since 1998, so it started as a competition wildcat based off 6mm PPC necked-up, was evolved into a higher case capacity cartridge with Lapua and Bill A. collaborating on an optimized design, then offered commercially for both target and hunting customers.

From the beginning, it was compared with both .223 Rem and .308 Win in terms of hunting or target work.

I remember the FAQs from the early-mid 2000s:

Top Question Asked About The Grendel

    Q. What will the 6.5 Grendel do that I cant do with a .223 Remington?

Answer - The 6.5 Grendel extends the range capability of the AR15 platform and allows the AR15 to be used for ethical hunting of medium game such as Deer, Hogs and Sheep.

    Q. How does the 6.5 Grendel perform less than 300 meters since it seems to be designed for beyond 300 meters?

Answer - Yes, the 6.5 Grendel was designed for long distance shooting. However, the Grendel's projectiles dont magically appear at 300 meters and go the distance. Many people have had great success hunting deer and wild boar at close range. History is the ultimate judge and 6.5mm has been a proven hunting caliber for well over a hundred years even at moderate velocities.

It’s the best small arms cartridge in an AR platform in my book.

What is funny about the quote is that there is nothing about the Grendel AR15 rifle that makes is anymore designed for hunting than any other AR15 rifle in another caliber is designed for hunting. Same for the cartridge. The only part that might be designed for hunting may be the bullet, which is just .264 caliber and shot in other calibers as well that also were not necessarily designed for hunting.

People often confuse (or use interchangeably) designer intent (wishful thinking for real world application), design intent (physical design that will hopefully satisfy designer intent), and real world application by end users.

The only thing that a 6.5 Grendel is designed to do is to launch a .264 caliber bullet fired from a 6.5 Grendel case out of a rifle chambered for it in a controlled manner. Whether that is applied to hunting, target shooting, or military endeavors is an application of the design. It may have been Bill Alexander et al.'s own intent for the 6.5 Grendel to replace the .223, but there is nothing in the physical design of the 6.5 Grendel that makes it do that, nothing. Whether or not it would replace the .223 was completely outside of the parameters of the actual physical design and not found on any blueprint. That replacement would be an application decision outside of the parameters of the physical design, and in this case, outside of the control of the designers.
