Has anyone ever tried rebarreling a Mini 30 in 6.5 grendel, and would there be any advantages? I know people talk about the need for an AR12.5, so I'm curious if the beefer mini 30 design would address any of them.
Mini 30 rebarrel?

There was a Mini 30 converted to 6.5 Grendel on Gunbroker in the last couple of years but the price was high. After seeing a friend try to get an accurate 223/5.56 Mini with the latest model, I don't think I would do the conversion. My friend sent his Mini off for an expensive trigger job, new stock and ended up sending the Mini 14 back to Ruger. The rifle consistently had first round fliers. When the Mini was returned it was better but not great. His Mini 14 is basically a 1.5 MOA gun with it's best load and 2 to 3 MOA (or worse) with about any other 223/5.56 ammo.
The real advantage of the Mini 14 is light and quick handling short range carbine. The AR-15 platform lends itself to conversions more easily than the Mini 30. First thing, normal 7.62 X 39 mags do not feed 6.5 Grendel cartridges past a few rounds because of the different case taper.
If you use the Ranch Rifle your limited to mounts and scopes compared to a an AR-15 based 6.5 Grendel. I don't think the Mini works as good with red dot sights as the AR-15. It is easy to switch between scope and RDS on AR-15, probably not on a Mini.
With the Gas Block design, the Mini 14 does not lend it to free floating the barrels compared to an AR-15.
The source for after market parts for the Mini are limited as Ruger restricts most FCG & bolt parts.
If I was looking for a 6.5 Grendel that was not an AR-15 I would like a bolt action rifle in 6.5 Grendel. The Mini Mauser seem to be the cheapest route at this point unless you have Savage action needing a new barrel.
This is just my opinion since no one else has chimed in.Last edited by VASCAR2; 06-14-2014, 02:31 AM.
