Ruger American Predator in 6.5 Grendel, initial impressions.

    Well,

I picked up my RAP today from my LGS today. Very nice! First thing I did was a tear down. Wiped all the machine oil off the barrel/receiver. The stock is far better than the original Tupperware.
The original stock on the RAR was like shaped bubble gum. The fore end was extremely flexible. This new one is significantly stiffer. I had to relieve the left side because the v bedding seems to set it to the left.
But it is now completely free floated.
The trigger is great, I adjusted mine to about 4 pounds. It feels like a good two stage, and breaks very cleanly. Bolt action is smooth, but still very new. It will be smoother with time.
My Elander mags worked great, no sticking and smooth release and lock up. Using 5 dummy rounds I cycled the action. The ejection of the cartridges was sure and positive, the extractor and ejector combo were sure and positive.
The barrel had a ton of oil and dirt in it. Had to do a dozen patches with CLP to get the gunk out. Will hope to have a range report tomorrow. A2

Did you compare to the Howa? Looking at both. LGS has both $600 for Howa and $475 for RAP. Good to know stock is stiff. What did you use to open up the stock? Thanks, Nelson

        Dr,

The stock is attached to the barreled Action by two screws that are Allen heads. A2

Yes, I understand that. What tools did you use to help free float barrel from the stock? Thanks, Nelson

Good stuff... I am leaning toward one of these myself.

Not sure about his update, but I have put about 500 rounds through mine so far and it works great. Only issue I have had is there is some looseness at the front of the mag that lets it dip forward and it pivots down. I am going to do a small wedge on each side of the front of the magwell to tighten it up some. Other than that it had been flawless, I have a couple of loads so far that are sub MOA out to 300 yards, that is as far as I have been able to shoot it so far.

usmcm16a2 didn't care for it in the end, so I bought it from him. As previously mentioned, the mags can tilt forward and cause a mis feed. The stock is better than some Ruger Americans, but it is still pretty flimsy. The Howa stock is much better even though some guys complain about it as well. a2 said that the barrel would heat up and after a few rounds and the groups would start to open up. I'm going to use it for deer hunting, so I'm not too worried about that. If I get the barrel hot shooting that many rounds at a deer, I better give up hunting.

Hello, new to 6.5 and new to 6.5. Have had my rap for 3 weeks now, $430.00 from sportsmans outdoor super store. Did relieve left foregrip(sandpaper) 2 inch 5 shot group on 6 inch gong at 300yds. First time out with 4-14 mil. primary arms(borrowed from my spr) Horn. eld match. Love it so far.
