14.5" Grendel barrel with midlength gas OK?

    Hi all,

I am thinking about cutting my 16" Alexander Arms 6.5G barrel down to 14.5". The barrel has a midlength gas system. Do you think I'll be OK without having to mess with the gas port?

    Thanks!

      I had a 14.5 midlength 5.56 that was great, I think it'll be fine.

Now you can get that barrel threaded properly

You'll likely need to open the gas port, especially for cold weather and lighter projo weights.

I know my 5.56 Noveske middy works just fine. However I don't know if there is a difference in gas port size from a carbine to middy on a 5.56. I would think if the gas port size on a 5.56 is the same between the carbine and middy that it would be fine for the 6.5 Grendel.

But like LRRPF52 said, it might have an issue in cold weather.

5.56 has way less bore space, so you can get away with a lot more with it compared to 6.5 Grendel or 7.62 NATO.

I have a Model 605 Retro with RLGS and 15.75" barrel that runs great so far, never choked on me yet, but I haven't really tortured it.

I'm thinking about converting it to Grendel for a steel cased blaster, since I rarely shoot it now. If I do that, it will have a concealed MLGS for sure.

Yeah good point on bore space or volume on a 556 versus Grendel. I guess the thought is with the additional volume in the bore the pressure is less than the 556?
