You want it to contain molybdenum disulfide. A tub is a couple of bucks,...buy once and your good for all the grendels you'll build.

I've used Mobil 1 and Aeroshell, over the years, I haven't noticed a difference. Amazon sells repackagers of Aeroshell for smaller prices than a full cartridge, Umbrella for $7.95 as an example.

Go to your local auto shop buy the cheapest smallest tube of Mobil 1 or it's knockoff brand and have enough barrel nut thread grease to build several thousand guns.

No not at all, don't use that. Wd40 has water in it, not something you want it between a aluminum threaded area and a steel barrel nut.

Cheap Mobil 1 grease in a tub is cheap and perfect for the job and will last you thousands of builds.

Think wheel bearing or axle grease, it needs high temperature stability , anti corrosion.

About the only thing white lithium is good for is bicycle bearings and model trains. And I don't use it for those things anymore either. It's not even waterproof.

Went to Malwart, looked at their $3-$4 tubs of grease, picked high-temp high-pressure red one. I use a hobby brush to paint thin coating on bolt lugs, 1911 slides and everywhere else metal slides against metal.

I use good anti-seize on barrel nuts.

I bought a tub of Castrol LMM (high-pressure/high-temp with moly) years ago for a few dollars. It works fine for this job and anything else you might need grease for.

Posted wrong lube this is it. I have used the oil but will probably fill the bottle with Mobil 1 0W-15.

Stay away from copper, galvanic or dissimilar metal corrosion can occur with a stainless barrel and aluminum upper and a different metal barrel nut with copper mixed in. which one will become the anode and which the cathode? Use grease an follow the installation instructions for torquing the barrel nut.
