WTF is a intermediate gas length :P WTF would they even have that? SMDH.
From what I've been able to gather looking through the 'net:
The intermediate gas system is popular for rifle barrels 16" to 18" long 'cause it smooths out the recoil impulse by putting the gas port where the port pressure will be lower than with a mid-length gas system without reducing reliability. It shortens the dwell time to about the same as a rifle-length system. Supposed to work real well with 16" to 18" Grendel barrels.
I refuse to be victimized by notions of virtuous behavior.
I have a 16" Ruger MPR with a intermediate length gas system. As Old Bob said, smoother and more reliable than carbine length in barrel lengths too short for rifle length systems. My MPR has yet to have any sort of malfunction in the years I've had it.
