Not only does your rifle shoot but it looks like you can too. Outstanding group, I would be very happy with that rifle.

Nice work. Now drifter you know we're going to need to see some pictures of that weapon.

I hope my cerakoted barrels come back half as sharp as that black nitrate looks. Where did you get it done and how much did it run you if you don't mind me asking.

Thanks guys. I get plenty of practice, but a shooter can't do it unless the barrel is up to the task. Kudos to Lilja.

Black Nitride process was done by H&M Metal Processing:

Cost was $100, which included return shipping. I had the barrel back in 10 days, which means they turned it around in 3 days.

Before sending it to H&M, I cleaned the unfired barrel, then polished the bore with JB Bore Bright. Cleaned and polished again when I got it back.

                  Drifter,
Did I miss the barrel length? Profile ?

                    304 profile

It measures ~16.5" from bolt face to muzzle.

                    IIRC, it weighs ~1.75 lbs.

Fantastic velocity from a 16" with factory loads. Do you think that the Nitride has increased it's speed? I know you don't have a before and after but I'm still curious on your thoughts.

Somewhat out of character for me, I really didn't research it too much. I don't know if the process has any real effect on accuracy or velocity. I knew that I wanted the barrel to be black, and figured the process wasn't too much more expensive than getting it blasted and coated. Knowing that the process hardens the metal, I tried to simulate break-in via the bore polishing, as some people seem to think that a break-in (via shooting) is best beforehand. Others suggest that the barrel should be clean and unfired for the treatment. I don't know which is best, so I sorta split the difference. I'm encouraged by the results so far.

Dang they claim the coating will bring a 10" group at 500 meters down to a 4" group. That's quite a big difference.

                          Consistent velocities too.

Nice find. Velocity increase is also indicated.

:? They nitrated the inside of the barrel too?

Yes, the whole thing gets the treatment. When I got the barrel back, it took a few dozen patches through it before they started coming out clean.
