But, I agree that she was at the limit of both range and animal size for the 123 grain SST. The bullet likely hit at about 100 fps above the recommended threshold for reliable expansion, an uncorrected 5 mph wind would have taken the bullet out of the vital zone. Regarding animal size, the 123 gr SST, being a cup and core bullet, is a bit light for reliable anchoring of an animal of that size.
All these factors only add to the significance of her feat!

The lowest elevation they would be in Colorado is 7500 ft, and you don't often see elk down that low there during season in my experience living in CO.
When you run the numbers on that bullet from her barrel length with 7500 ft elevation, which will have lower barometric pressure in the 22.5" hg region, her impact speed is more than enough for expansion. Looking at page 46 in Volume II of the 6.5 Grendel reloading handbooks, you see the bullet is still in the optimum region for expansion, rather than ice-picking like it would at minimum expansion.
123gr SST 2580fps (assumed minimum v0 with 24" barrel), 22.5" hg, 59* F
400yds 2005fps 1097 ft-lbs 1.7 mils drop .8 mils drift
From the video, it looked like one shot went through his leg even and then into the vitals. I personally think he was done with the first shot, and was losing blood pressure fast, based on how hard it was for him to stand up. He finally got his legs under him, and was doing everything he could to walk away, and he just didn't have the perfusion to sustain normal mental function. I personally would and have chosen a different bullet for elk hunting, with solids being a nice reliable penetrator, but this worked for them in the end, even at that range.
It will be interesting to see if they recovered the bullet.NRA Basic, Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, RSO

I agree. Dead with the first shot but it didn't know it yet. I'm betting it would have lay there and died if the camera guy hadn't told her to shoot it again.Knowing everthing isnt as important as knowing where to find it.
