Ten year old son finally got his first buck. Grendel, 120 Nosler BT, just under 300 yards, perfect neck shot, no tracking for me. Great Buck Fever after the shot. Took me back to my first one.

Here’s something for you guys to ponder. I grew up hunting. All my friends hunted. All my friend’s farthers hunted. We live in the country, but his school is in town about an hour away. It’s a big school. I ask him if he told anyone about his deer. He said no, because he doesn’t know anyone who hunts. I’m afraid the end is near. I think we should pick a day each year, that all forum members take a kid (yours or someone else’s) hunting. If we don’t start doing our part, the end will be here much faster.

My hunting and fishing association tries to do this every year. Problem is competing with some kind of ball sport schedule or actually getting kids away from some sort of video device. Actually had had kids say that if they could not take along some sort of device to play with they will not go.
Congratulation to your son. I know all about Buck Fever AFTER the kill. It happened to me on my first one. Deer were few and far between back then. I had hunted from the age of 13 until 18 before I saw my first deer while hunting and it just happened to be a buck. I shot it with my Marlin 30-30 at about 50 yards and was as cool as could be while shooting it. Deer ran down the mountain side and after a short wait I trailed it. When I walked around a big laurel bush and saw the deer laying on the ground about 15 yards away I got to shaking and my knees were about passing each other and I had to sit down right there for about 15 minutes before I could get up and go down to my deer. LOL
