Can wolf ammo be used to hunt hogs?

Have you used or tried Wolf 6.5 Grendel for hog hunting? Good or bad results?

You would want to use Wolf Gold soft point. People have used it and I understand it works. I have not used it as Wolf seems under powered compared to other Grendel hunting ammo like Hornady SST.

I have used Wolf FMJ 120 grain for shooting hogs. They tumble after impact and kill real well. None of them were over 250 pounds and were dead in less than 50 yards. Try it and see if it works for you.

Better check with your game and fish on what bullets that can be used, we can't hunt anything with fmj bullets. we can shoot hogs at night under spotlights any time of the year, but no fmj allowed.

I have shot a bunch of hogs and deer with Wolf HP ammo and it preformed quite well. It was 7.62X39 out of both an AK and AR...bullet weight was 123gr...steel case...the 6.5 Grendel ammo should be GTG!

Unless the state your hunting in says no fmj's for game hunting.

Op it will work if placed right just make sure your states game laws says it's ok to hunt game animals with fmj loaded ammo.

If your State laws allow use of FMJ. The 100gr Barnaul projectile seems to have similar construction to the 5.45x45mm 7n6, which has a cavity in the front, creating a rear-heavy projectile that is biased towards yawing in tissue.

Here are the results of one running hog that was shot in not the best area, but killed it quickly anyway.

I sell guns and ammo in the retail world as a full time gig in N. Texas. I hear a lot of "hoggin" stories from a LOT of people. The typical results from folks using FMJ is poor to indistinguishable results ( they can't tell if they hit or not ). But what I also hear as a common thread is that hogs are gettiing smarter about the presence of people because they are surviving those FMJ hits. It is a bad idea to use FMJ ammo for anything but killing paper.

I would say that poor to indistinguishable results is an apt description based on my limited testing which came to an end last night. Video will be out later. Simply put, the round does not appear to do remarkable damage so as to bring down hogs quickly.

As for the hogs getting smarter due to being shot with FMJ and surviving, I think that is just an excuse by hunters to explain away why they didn't see hogs. I have shot a few hogs that were shot previously. I don't know that it was FMJ, but then again, the hog would not know either. The hogs had survived being shot and yet got shot again.

I’m new here. And new to the 6.5 Grendel. But all that aside I’d be very hesitant to hunt anything with FMJ. Hornady Black 123gr ELD can be found for 17-18 a box. Splurge and put one of those through a hog’s brain pan. I know using the 6.5 Creedmoore 140gr is like hitting them in the off button.
                              Welcome diver!

If shooting through the brain, FMJ is fine. No reason to splurge. That is part of the problem of using head shots for evaluating ammo. As long as the ammo penetrates, it can be very effective when shooting through the brain case.
