    Not a Grendel kill, but...

My lovely bride and I were in different stands a few days ago, and this bruiser showed up in front of her, bird dogging a doe. She was able to stop him and put one in the boiler house.2019 buck.jpeg

Field dressed 200 lbs and I scored him at 150-155. The bullet was a 140 gr Berger Hunting VLD, out of a 7-08. We've had really good performance with this bullet in the past, but this time the bullet seemed to deflect off of a rib on entry and then fragment explosively. Significant lung damage, but deflected through the diaphragm and broke a couple ribs on the off side, with no exit. We found him where he piled up within about 30 yards, so I guess the bullet performance was perfect. I'm glad he didn't go any further, because there was no blood trail.

All I did was load her rifle and send her on her way.

And find the buck, mostly by smell. And drag him out (with her help). And field dress. And butcher. But enough about me. That's the biggest deer we've killed so far and I'm really proud of her. He's going on the wall.

That's in a Ruger M77 Hawkeye. It was becoming my favorite deer rifle until I had to cut the stock down to fit her. Good thing the Grendels came along not long after.
