Wrong cartridge for elk size game.......300 winmag or similar would be much better suited.

I'm guessing CJW's post was "tongue in cheek" kind of remark. maybe to stir up the thread some more, maybe just a spoof. though smaller cartridges give you less margin, it's still mostly about putting a good bullet in the right place.

Is he sure there wasnt 2 bulls and he didnt find the first. Maybe the first shot didnt land?

Hard to think anything, hit in the boiler room, would live that long without dying of blood loss, tension pneumothorax, asphyxia, etc.

Lets just say I always too something more powerful elk hunting on my 3 day or 6 day hunts but if the Grendel was the only thing I had to hunt with and had an elk hunt, I would dang sure hunt elk and just be very careful with shot selection, and if the tag did not get filled it would not be the first time I ate and elk tag.

No doubt. Does you know what type of bullet he was using?

The bullet was probably the problem. I have only used one Remington factory load on game and the exit hole was quite obviously the profile of a bullet that tumbled after having no expansion.

Seems like I remember a post or video about an elk being taken at long range using a maker t-Rex bullet. I hunt with Speer gold dots. Both expand at lower velocities

Reading that last post, I would say it was a combination of shot placement and bullet choice. A large cow and especially a bull can be larger than a cape buffalo and I do not know anyone that would intentionally go for one of those with a 7mm Mag.

I"m a 6.5 mm bigot, but when I chase cow elk, I tote my 260 Rem.
