Red deer with the 6.5 Grendel

In New Zealand, Red DeerOpen country scene Kaimanawas s.jpeg

A rather noisy insect that's common in the late summer:

This is the way I had the Grendel at that time, with a known good, but heavy, scope. I was shooting 120gr NBT handloads.

The next one was in the Kaimai rangesBush hunt 4 pt s.jpeg

The third was in the Ruahine Ranges, which are more typical NZ North Island hunting, with bouldery rivers you can only just cross, steep sides, thick bush and the occasional grassy river flat and slip beside the river.

This is travel up a side creek, into some very nice hunting country.

And this is the main river, where you can also fish for brown trout, if you have the skills and the licence.

With two of us, it was an easy load back by torch light to our fly camp, but the next day with the meat from the full grown stag as well, it was an epic 6 hour carry, down the river to the car.
