Hornaday black = 2 cow elk kills

Took both my daughter (10) an nephew (13) out hunting this weekend, well it was a 4 day weekend. They both had jr cow elk hunt tags. My daughter has shot my grendel AR alot before and can pelt clays at 100 yards constantly. Ammo is hornaday black so nothing crazy. My nephew learned to shoot just 6 months ago on this same grendel AR which is zeroed at 200yds. (100 yd pre hunt verification )

Daughters first shot on opening day was a front shoulder hit at 165yds that made the cow fall and could not get up. The followup was a neck shot at 125 yds that put her down. Cutting it up, the shoulder none was turned to mush. No bullet recovered. The neck showed alot of trauma damage but was a pass thru.

Next day my nephew shot one at 205 yds in the hind quarter that stopped her at 184 yards. The followup shot was in the boiler room that put her down. The hind quarter bone was broken in half and splintered out, no bullet recovered. The boiler room shot made lung soup and no bullet recovered as well.

Just when I started to look at 30-378 Weatherby seriously, you go and do something like this, and ruin my nostalgic desires to go mega-Fudd.

Saw some brass for it for $184.99 yesterday, 50 pieces.

The freezer is packed. And I really cant be happier about the outcome especially when you bite into a elk burger. I hope my nephew keeps the momentum.

                  Very nice and congrats!
52 that reminds me.... 'way back in the day (70's) I had a colleague at the time who missed his deer in Idaho with a 30-06, shot him but didn't recover (bad shot right?). His solution? He bought a full 378 Weatherby Mag... all for the pesky deer!!! Talk about 'fudding right??

LOL!!! 378 Weatherby for deer. That's like guy that I work with that most deer seasons shoots a deer at 50 to 125 yrd for private land hunt in Colorado with a 300 win mag. Half the time both of the deer's shoulders are blown to bits to the point that the inner backstraps are sometimes super blood shot. Wasted meat.

And that is what I love about the medium powered cartridges: 6.5 Grendel, 35 Remington, 350 Legend, 30-30, heck, even 54 and 58 round ball black powder. They get the job done and don't destroy the meat unnecessarily. 300 Win Mag is impressive on paper, but unless you are making a kill at very extended distances, I want no part of it.

What?? You were not able to find a 57mm Recoilless Rifle? On one hand, you don't need to grind your own hamburger and sausage! On the other, it takes a few hours to gather up the pieces.

Quite a stellar result. That cow elk is massive in comparison to your daughter, how much meat did you get?

I have to be honest, I'm impressed. I just put together a 6.5 Grendel and keep waffling pondering if the cartridge has enough umph...

One thing I do want to hunt is bear. From what I've heard, elk are tougher than black bear. To say you lit up your nephew's life is an understatement.
                              From my cold dead endmill...
