Opinion on Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 6x18x40mm? Advantage of Mil dot over fine duplex? Thanks

Mil dot every day pal. Makes for easy wind adjustment. Well for me anyhow!

Thanks for the reply on Mil Dot. Have you had or heard anything about the scope itself? I have always had Leupold so I assume it is a good scope. I plan to put it on a Rock River Predator HP .308

I've had no experience with leupold but saying that if you have always had them and like them (I'm guessing there) they must be good for you.

          I've got the 3-9x40mm Mark AR w/duplex on my 18" 5.56.
I like it so well I'm going with 6-18x40 on my 20" 5.56.
I think reticle choice is a personal preference, I like the duplex myself.

1" tube diameter with objective (hard to reach and adjust) focus, for $700+? Save your money and get a Vortex with more features and durability for less, with way better reticle options.

            That's what I would do.

how long of a shot would you be thinking you would be approaching? or would you want to mildots for figuring distance to target? mildots are neat for long shots with a cartridge that will have appreciatable drop at the longer range. or possibly cartridges that have drop at short ranges like a 458 socom trying to shoot 250 to 300+ yards. otherwise a fine duplex will be all a 308 needs shooting maybe only 300-400 yards, tiny holdover,,,,,

Distance could be as far as 400+ yards. I am setting up a series of steel target up on my acreage in Northern MN ranging from 6" at the closer end and 12x20 at the longer end. All shots will be in and across typical hunting cover and at varying ranges. The 6x18 might be a bit more then I may need, but the $ difference between 4.5x14 and it isn't that great and so I am opting to go the distance. I can get the Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 6x18x40mm for $500 brand new without tax and free shipping. The Vortex was another option, and from everything I have read a very good scope. My long time reliance upon Leupold is based in customer service experience. Years ago, my wife surprised me with a Thompson Center Encore and when I mounted a Leupold scope on it, I couldn't get it to sight in. My first instinct was to assume the scope was bad. I returned it to Leupold and a short time later I got it back with a letter explaining the scope was fine, but the Encore barrels have a slant which require different bases/rings. They sent me the rings and bases free of charge! I was sold.

I would also add to the above, that I have used Leupold scopes on hunts in Canada, out west and Alaska on extended hunts in rugged conditions without a single issue or problems. Let hope this continues!

I used the M3A fixed 10x sniper scope on various M24s in the Army. It always held up well, but had Mil Dot reticle with MOA turrets.

They were the heat in the late 80's, early 90's, but better things came along.

The Leupold turrets still feel mushy to me, even on the new high end scopes from them in the Mk. 6 line, at least the ones I have handled at SHOT. The Mk IV glass is very clear.

The little 2-7x scopes make great general purpose hunting scopes.

I'm not sure how they retain optical elements, and I know how Vortex and NF do it, with the consistent results of reliability plus features.

I really like the zero stop on a scope for shooting long range. I don't know how we manged without them before.

I have the 4-12x version with mildots on one of my rifles. Shooting it yesterday, the difference in brightness and clarity compared to my Vortex 2.5-10 ffp was noticeable on the 500yd gong. I could see far more detail on the gong with the Leupold, whereas with the Vortex, the gong was more of a circular blur. That being said, I really liked that my Vortex's hashmarks are consistent out to 500yds with Hornady SST ammo(i.e. with a 200yd zero, my hits are in the center(or close) of my ranges gongs out to the 500yd mark using the numbered marks on the reticle). The Vortex Viper PST line, as stated before, is more expensive, but you get illumination, ffp, 30mm tube, and in my experience far less parallax shift compared to the Mark AR. My next scope will be a Vortex PST 4-16.

Have a Vortex Viper PST 2X10X32, not the optics that are in my Kahles, Swaro or Bushnell 6500 but they are not bad. Not a fan of Leupold products after having 3 die on trips to Montana, 2 on my rifles a VX-II and a VX-III and another VX-III on a friends rifle. All those started failing to hold zero when we got to Montana to hunt elk. The conditions were warm in Texas before we left and single digit temps when we got to Montana. Sure they replaced all 3 scopes but kinda leaves me never wanting to buy one again. Have almost purged their products from my safe since then.
