Comparison of CProducts mags and Ammunition Storage Components mags

    Hi All,

I just got my first ASC mags (http://www.ammosc.com/storename/ammu...pt-273393.aspx)

From what I gather, these guys took over the CProducts tooling and started producing the mags.

    I got a 10 round and a 17 round mag.

I expected them to be identical to the old CProducts mags, but they aren't.

The first thing I noticed was that the 10 round mag felt heavier than my old CP 10 rounder.

I weighed them and the CP mag was 3 ounces and the ASC mag was 4 ounces. They are both stainless but the ASC mag didn't flex as much when I squeezed in on the sides.

I pulled the floor plate out of both to measure the wall thickness. It was harder to get the ASC floor plate out because it was thicker than the CP floor plate.

This is a welcome change. With my older mags the floor plate starts to come loose when I shoot sometimes. I've warped the floor plates removing them for cleaning.

The thickness of the metal on the CP mag was 17 thousandths and the new ASC was 19 thousandths.

That is very subjective because the stamping process may affect this. I don' know what metal thickness they started with, but the ASC seems to be thicker steel.

It may just be heat treated differently for more rigidity, but it has stiffer walls without a doubt.

All mags dropped free of the mag well when empty on an open bolt (no assist from the mag spring).

The ASC 10 round mag held 10 rounds and seated and locked when full on a closed bolt (worst case).

Several of my CP mags hold 10 rounds, but there is no give left on the spring when full, so you really have to pound it to lock the mag in the well on a closed bolt.

The 17 round ASC mag only held 14 rounds. The rounds are seated pretty long but I took the rounds in question out of a full 25 round CP magazine.

Taking a look at the outside of the mags, a few things pop out. The stampings on the new ASC mags aren't as sharp, which also indicates that the steel is thicker.

Instead of the shiny black teflon, they are a grey matte finish, like military mags.

The 17 rounder looks like the old 5.56 20 round military mag.

The rectangular hole in the side for the magazine catch of the ASC mag has a ramp stamped above the hole.

The spot welds on the front and rear edges of the ASC mag holding the two halves together have a slightly raised bump on them rather than he circular indention of the CP mags. Don't know if this affects anything.

The ASC mags appeared to be more uniform. The widths at the top of both was 0.87 inches and the bottom of both was 0.88. The CP mags were 0.87 and 0.93 for a 10 round and 0.87 an 0.96 for a 25 round mag, for example.

The blue plastic follower in the ASC mag has "6.5" molded in. The follower in this CP mag doesn't, but I've seen it in others. In fact, all of my other CP mags have the "6.5" in them. My oldest mag is from Alex-A and it doesn't have the "6.5."

The anti-tilt legs in the ASC mag are longer in the rear than the older CP mag. The CP mag has anti ilt legs about the same length front and back. The ASC anti tilt legs in the back are longer than the front ones.

The follower has lots of differences. I think the ones without the "6.5" are old production with the old follower style.

The new ASC 10 round mag looks like an improvement. I haven't had them to the range yet.

I'll follow up when I try them out.

Good first-article inspection. Mags have been a question and it sound like ASC has done a good job reintroducing the Mags. Hope you follow-up with a range report.
RR, thank you for time spent and sharing your findings.
