Scope Height / Scope Mount Issue on an AR Platform

This is my first experience with a high power, large objective scope. But now I have a scope height mount issue.

    - The scope is NightForce SHV 5-20 x56 (30mm Tube)
o Eyepiece outer diameter is 1.69?/43mm
    o Exit Pupil Diameter is 8.7mm at 5x and 2.5mm at 20x
    - The scope mount is a Nightforce X-Treme Duty Ultralite One-Piece Magmount
    o Mount height 1.375?
    - The stock is a Luth-AR MBA-1 Rifle stock

The problem is that in order to get a good view through the eyepiece, you really have to get you cheek pressed into the cheek piece. It?s not easy to repeat and with ear protection and glasses on, even if you get your head aligned, your gear is messed up.

So I am looking at swapping out the mount get additional scope height. Here are some options:

    - Nightforce X-Treme Duty Ultralite One-Piece Magmount: Height is 1.375" (Currently in use)
    - Burris P.E.P.R Mount: Height 1.6"
    - SPUHR SP-3024: Height 1.89?

So, you guys who have experience with these kinds of scopes, what did you do? How do you manage scope height on an AR platform ?

I have found that with the ar platform you need scope mounts that are higher to get a quick repeatable clear veiw. The burris is the least expensive (I don't want to say cheapest because I do think it is well made) of the three and they do work well. I have a QD version and taking it off and on holds pretty well.

I would not go with the burris. Nightforce has higher mounts as well as larue. I now have a spuhr hunting line and like it allot.

What height has worked best for you ? This is the first time I have run into this issue... my other rifles are bolts and the cheek role has always been nearly perfect - but those are all much smaller objective lens scopes too...

I have a Burris P.E.P.R on my desk. It was part of another setup. Quality is good. The reason I haven't swapped out the NF mount I have is that if the Burris is still too low, then I've just created more work and not solved a problem. There is only .225 of an inch (almost a quarter inch difference) between the NF and the Burris with the Burris being the taller one. In addition, the NF mount was supposed to be the go-to setup for this configuration... What is the typical heights of the mounts you all normally use ?

            Straightshot,

I use a SPUHR 3616 which puts it 1.5" above the rail. You won't want or need higher than that for long range shooting (your SHV is a long range scope). At 1.5" that puts the scope 2.5" above the bore. Already much higher than a bolt gun and the higher the scope the more canting the gun becomes a concern.

Tighter cheek welds are good for running and gunning (e.g. the Noveske team uses SPUHR's with 1.25" height).

The 3024 is high but it is not forward canted. You'll want a 20MOA (6Mil) cant for the longest ranges if using this calibre. Your SHV has 40MOA of usable elevation above the centre and you will need at least 45.

Your earmuffs shouldn't interfere with the stock at 1.5". I take it your glasses are corrective (not sunnies). Are your glasses dislodging the muffs when you push your head against the stock, or are the muffs hitting the stock?

Yeah - my glasses are slightly corrective... just enough that I need them to read but not enough for almost everything else. With a scope I can tune the focus as to not need glasses - but - because I wear glasses just walking around, my eyes have to adjust and that is the issue... so I just shoot with them on. … Actually the stock pushes the muffs and the muffs mess with the glasses - another PIA.

I love the scope... it's fantastic.. but now I have a single piece mount that is both expensive and useless.... and I love the 6.5 Grendel - incredibly forgiving in so many ways and very easy to reload properly.... love it..

gonna take a deep breath and go look at the other SPUHR options now.....

OK - yes this is nice...

              Article no.: SP-3616

Absolute co-witness most clip-on NV units on AR platforms. Allows the scope to be mounted 40 mm/1.57” farther forward than with a non-cantilever mount.

              6 MIL/20,6 MOA
              Height: 38 mm/1.5”
              Length: 150 mm/5.9”
              Weight: 242 g/8.5 oz

Depending on your muffs you may be able to buy replacement pads that have relief cuts for the eyeglass temples. They are intended more for comfort but can assist with minor shifting.

One example there are others out there:
                Compatible with hearing protection earmuffs from 3M™, Howard Leight®, Invisio®, Ops-Core®, Peltor™, Sordin®, TCI®, Walker's Game Ear®, and many more.

A simpler option might be to lower the cheek piece on the luth ar stock. I put the luth ar 2 on my savage ba stealth and had to adjust the stock all the way down to get eye alignment on the scope
