  • Vortex Custom Turret

Well I tried out my Vortex custom turret today for my 6-24 PST FFP MOA. I'm still a little mixed on it. It did get me hits on steel at 300,400,500, and 600 yards with dialing right to those distances on the turret. I haven't played with it at longer range yet, and honestly I'm wondering how it will work at say 850 yards, etc. It eliminates a step at known distances (checking the Shooter app), but like I say may not be as usable at "in between" distances. They also etched 1 click = 0.5 MOA which is not correct, should be .25 MOA. I emailed them Saturday and haven't gotten a response, we'll see what they say. I think I could like it, but more testing will tell.

On closer examination, there seems to be marks for every 25 yards, so it may well be more usable than I thought. Also thought I would mention, I started with a group at 200 (.321" BTW), ran through the different distances on the turrets making hits, then went back to 200 and printed another solid (.424") group at the same point of impact. The Vortex seems to return to zero very well in my limited experience.

Everything looks great except that 1 Click=0.5 MOA. I'm not sure how that got screwed up. As long as you generate a drop chart for your temperature conversions, and elevation if you shoot anywhere else, that will help you be on as the distance gets further. Did you set your zero-stop shims up?

Yes zero stop shims are set. Going to test the distances on paper as soon as I can and figure the ballistic app will be handy for different conditions even if the drops are right on at the standard condition.

Very cool.....as long as you never change bullets or powder.

Then I could change back to the regular turret, or if all else fails I could study up on counting by .25 :-)

Thanks for this info, blackfoot. I topped by recent hunting/general purpose build with a Viper 2-7X32 with the specific intent to add the TMT turrets. Hopefully, this will give me a fast and accurate engagement out to about 600 yards. It's good to know the turrets seem to be working as advertised.

Question: what 123 grain bullet has a .547 BC?

That's what the Vortex long range calculator using G7 ballistics information puts the 123 Scenar at. I believe this number has been since revised by Lapua's own radar data and Brian Litz to be slightly lower.

Got my replacement turret today. They got it correct this time and it looks good. Now I have three turrets for the PST :-)
