It acts like a muzzle brake and smooths the recoil impulse. In some guns like a .338LM it is most noticeable.
It has military applications like confounding the enemy as to the location of the shooter, permitting verbal communication and being able to discern who's who and where by the different sounds your people make and the enemy.
...and it looks cool.
