  • Rare, Discontinued Leupold Mk 4, MR/T 3-9x36mm SPR Scope

Mark 4, Mid-Range/Tactical, 3-9x36mm Special Purpose Rifle Scope

This particular scope was specifically made in response to the Special Purpose Rifle project, since the existing M3A fixed 10x scope originally issued with the M24 Sniper Weapon System was too big, fixed at too high of a power for certain Designated Marksmen duties, and lacked illumination.

As the Special Operations community began looking at more compact optics with a variable power range, Leupold responded to user requests with a series of compact, mid-range optics that would keep the weapon profile at a minimum, provide excellent optical clarity, incorporate an improved hash-based Milliradian reticle, and add an illuminated reticle option.

The scopes saw immediate use on the Mk. 12 Mod 0 Special Purpose Rifle, and some were also used on M14's that had been resurrected for DM/SPR duties.

This particular model is rare in that it has the traditional Leupold M1 target knobs, and a 3-9x variable magnification range. Later SPR optics from Leupold used the M2 BDC knobs and a 2.5-8x36 magnification range.

The benefits of the 3-9x36 MR/T are that you have the 3-9x magnification and M1 knobs with 1/4 MOA clicks, versus the rather obtuse 1/2 MOA clicks of the M2 system.

This scope is still under 12" long, even with the included Butler Creek flip caps, and weighs only 1 lb, 1.5 oz. If you are looking to mount American-made glass on a nice lightweight system where profile is important, this makes an excellent option.

If you are an aficionado/collector of the Special Purpose Rifle series, this is a unique opportunity to own a relatively unknown piece of history as well.

The later version 2.5-8x36 MR/T Mark 4 scopes go for $1200+ with illumination.

This one is priced to sell quickly at $899. It is used, glass is still excellent, and includes the Butler Creek flip caps as mentioned. The last time one of these popped up, it was a non-illuminated model and it sold within 24hrs.

    Tube diameter: 30mm
    Reticle: Tactical Milling Reticle (TMR)
    Length: 11.3"
Elevation turret: M1 knob, 1/4 MOA clicks
Windage turret" M1 1/4 MOA clicks
Eye relief was designed for AR15 type rifles
The clicks are very tactile and are quite audible
You can also have custom knobs made for it by Kenton Industries if you choose.

If you know anyone who is really big into SPR's, let them know about this optic if it doesn't appeal to you. They will thank you.
