Thoughts on New 277 SIG Fury?

SIG is planning to release to the civilian market their submission to the military's Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) development program.

Their civvie version will be called the 277 SIG Fury. One article among many HERE.

Meh...Give it a year and see what shakes out. Curious about reloadability. Steel base can't be good for the dies.

I think it looks interesting. The case is one that I've thought should be more prevalent. Though the expense is likely the holdback. The only significant downfall I see... they plan to release the cases for future chamberings - with no current production matching.
As such, likely destined for a short life.

Makes sense to use a stainless steel base to handle the 80,000 psi chamber pressure (required to get a .270 bullet going 3,000 fps from a 16" barrel, but I think long-term testing in temperature extremes at full-auto is required to see if the steel casehead base separates from the brass case body under extraction extremes.

Could be SIG doesn't want you to reload this hybrid cartridge. If you wanna keep shootin' ya gotta buy more ammo. But... we shooters will find a way to get'er done.

Looks like a pile of burnt out barrels in 3000 rounds and a bunch of pain in the shoulder pocket.

The felt recoil on that thing has to be stupid. Basicly 270 supershort ultra mag plus P cartridge. From a projected 7 pound rifle package.

I don't want to shoot it much less be at the range when it's fired.

Love the tech behind the case design, but don't see this working out as a civilian arm.

+1 on concern of short barrel life and accelerated wear/breakage of other components.

I read componets will be "made available" but at what cost and will it be feasible to reload them? Bullet choices at present are on the slim side.

I went to the JBM Ballistics Calculator and worked up some charts (attached) comparing the claimed specs of the 277n SIG Fury vs Hornady's 6.5 Creedmoor 140 ELD load.

65CM holds its own quite well at 2710 fps with a 0.655 BC bullet vs. the 277SIGF at 3000 fps with a 0.506 BC bullet — until you remember the 277 is supposedly 3000 fps from a 16" barrel!

Currently a proprietary barrel and extension/nut. Gonna have to wait for someone to figure out how to duplicate it, then...yeah, down to a 6 or up to a 7. Get some pills with some good BC numbers and that will change the LR and ELR game....never mind the Hunters who make up the majority of the market.

Their (Sig) website shows 6.5CM, .308 and .277 in 16 and 18 barrels.
Barrel life has to be the next step in rifle evolution. Rifled Ceramic, Tungsten or Cobalt inserts. Might be something polygonal rifling will do good with. Maybe a gain bore (.280 at the throat, .277 a the 6" mark

There was and maybe still is a company that was making a 2 piece barrel. The chamber that was screwed into your action, then the barrel screwed into the chamber so the lands were right there at the end of the threads and the chamber ended right at the SAMMI case mouth.
                          Sticks

                          Catchy sig line here.

"...a 6.5mm case is on the way..."

The speculation about this mysterious .277 SIG Fury has practically broken the internet. GunsAmerica spoke directly with an authoritative representative from SIG to get the scoop and figure out exactly what's going on with this cartridge.

I am not sure I see it working out as a military firearm without significant modifications to how the military addresses "fire superiority" issues.

I am curious as to how Sig designs a rifle to be "built like a tank" and yet only be in a 7 lb package. Interesting.

As you note, recoil is going to be very interesting. How do you tame the recoil for fast and proficient followup shots?

Does anyone have any video of this cartridge being shot from anything?
