My understanding is that high-power centrefire semi-auto rifles are now banned. Cops were in the shops on Thursday making sure no more sales occurred.
Primary producers will be permitted to own low-power semi-autos like a 10/22 for humane destruction and pest control. Above 1000-acres and you can apply for a high-power semi-auto (not too many large properties in NZ, maybe 1,000). No more high cap mags so probably 5-rd limited.
Service Rifle competition may be exempt with restrictions. No detail yet.
In NZ the person is registered, not the gun for most firearm classifications. This means how many Cat A (Cat A = California type AR's) guns are out there is anyone's guess. If the buy-back scheme is not generous then likely a portion will simply hang on to their guns and shoot them privately. Unlike Australia where the majority of States knew who had what in 1996 when the National Firearms Act came into effect, after Martin Bryant killed 35 with an AR.
