From a hunting perspective, shot placement is everything and velocity kills. Midsize cartridge is over-kill for majority of hunting ranges and also size of game. Personally, from a smaller cartridge that is going a bit slower I like a heavier bullet with wider cross-section than 6mm, so the 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, or 300BO. Yes, 6mm just barely gets into the heavier bullet range with the 105 Berger - 115DTac, but these bullets are so aerodynamic that it isn't as effective for expansion. I am hunting pigs, and average size I shoot is 150lbs and out to +300 lbs, with most shots within 100 yards. I would love to have opportunity for +300 yard shots but short of a commercial corn/wheat field that just isn't where my pigs live... they like mud and river bottoms.
I have a .243 that I built for long range that was dumbed "God's F Hammer" by a few pros, and it has sat idle past couple of years with my son being born. I have intentionally focused on other rifle projects knowing that this rifle has another 750 rounds before the accuracy will most likely drop off and then it is time to rebarrel. For precision, I like the 6mm over the 6.5mm, and next time I would consider a 6mm Creedmoor over the 243 Win now that there is Lapua brass available. Barrel life is consideration for all of the intermediates sized 6mm cartridges (1500 rounds). With that in mind have been giving serious thought to a 6BR or 6Dasher, or even 6GT. Bartllein has thrown a wrench into my process with their new steel alloy that they announced earlier this year. If the barrel life is now 2x-3x then a 6mm now could have the barrel life comparable to current 6.5 Creedmoor of 2500 rounds or more.
I'm not a big competition shooter so my suppressor pretty much mitigates any recoil variance between a 6mm Creedmoor and 6BR/Dasher. I don't hunt Elk so no need for +600 yard shots. Shooting 105gr Berger the Creedmoor will deliver 3000fps and so will BR/Dasher. Less powder/longer barrel life vs Lapua brass .... Decisions.
