My eldest (11) has just started this year and doesn't have an issue with the recoil. I put my Howa in a MDT LSS XL to aid with LOP fit and a fraction more weight though, and he prefers it in the chassis.

A brake might be good to watch impact on target, but for me the hassle of getting the barrel threaded and the extra length isn't worth it.
