Howa Mini Action 6.5 Grendel Accuracy

Actually, since the recoil lug is ALSO where the front action screw pulls the action down, it works fine to bottom out in that location. I bedded one of them as you describe and accuracy was only so-so. Rebedded it for full contact and accuracy came around to 1/2-3/4 MOA...it was 1-1 1/2 MOA before that.

Update: I sent the rifle back for inspection and got it back, to my disappointment they said the rifle was shooting Sub-Moa in the factory stock. So after getting it back, I decided to give it another shot. I double check the scope base, rings, and action screws, but I also installed it into an MDT LSS chassis ( yeah I went all out lol). Yesterday I took it out to the range and shot it off a bipod and improvised rear bag (I had forgotten my bag at home). The range That I use recently use saw a lot of rain so the 100-yard bays looked like lakes so that left the 200-yard bay open. Brought 2 boxes of the Hornady Black Ammo. I was surprised by the results my first 3 round, .833” and my next group was even better as the rifle warmed up. I think the biggest difference that I made was installing a bubble on my scope. During shooting, I would find that I would cant the rifle thus throwing my next shot off. I just “broke in” my barrel iaw factory instructions. Did you guys find the mini shot well out the gate? Or did it take a while find a load or Ammo maker that shot well?

I recently shot a 5 shot group from my Howa 1500 mini action std barrel at 50 metres of 0.36 inches. Using Lupua cases with Sierra matchking 120 gn bullets and 27.1 gns of RS 40
I cannot work out how to post a picture but it is a nice group

The best group I have managed using my Howa std barrel 1500 mini action with Boyds pro hunter stock at 50 metres was 0.36 inch with 5 shots using lapua cases and 120 gn Sierra Matchking over 27.1 gns of RS 40[ATTACH=CONFIG]14322[/ATTACH][ATTACH=CONFIG]14322[/ATTACH]

Mine is a heavy barrel in the factory stock.

Hornady brass, cci400’s, 120 NBT and 27.2grs H4895 produced a 10 shot group of .98” @107yds.


The 3 and 5 shot groups are smaller.

I found that my Howa 6.5 Grendel required an extended break-in of about 100 rounds, with frequently cleaning. Once I did that, my groups closed up quite a bid. My best combination was with Hornady 123 grain ELD bullets, Hornady cases, CCI 400 primers, and 29.5 grain of Alliant Power-Pro Varmint. This is a warm load that did not show excessive pressure signs. I did achieve 2555 fps average, with SD in the low teens. Groups were between o.4 and o.7 inches at 100 yards. It also liked the Lapua Scenar 123 grain HP, but with a smaller charge: 29.0 grains of Power-Pro Varment. The velocity was still 2550 fps average for most strings. The ambient temperature was 95 degrees. When I tested this round at 50 degrees F. the veocity fell about 60 fps, and the groups opened to just under one inch. Also, the rifle tolerated a long cartridge length with Benchmark and H322 (group size between 0.7 and 0.9 inches at 100 yards), but not with Varmint. I had to seat the bullet back to COAL: 2.250"

Howa mini in factory stock, heavy 20" barrel.
Was with the bench rest guys, they have a small informal competition. there is diffrent classes, I was the hunter klass (ie, max weight around 4kg, max 12x zoom, only separate rests or bipods allowed).
5 x 5 shots. Avrage 13-17mm. One group was larger, 34mm, but that was because i tried the v-max 95 i had loaded up. They had shot better.
Anyways, the 4 good groups was 13-17 and was 140 ELD-M (group 1 17mm), group 3-4-5 scenar 123 all 13-15mm.

I would have won the class if it wherent for the 95 vmax that shot like crap, the winner was avrage 18mm.

There was a guy with a 308 that had 20k shots through the barrel and he still performed 20mm avrage..

Never shoot groups as good as when I do it on these mini-competitions. Wincall is paramount, without them its basicly impossible to go sub moa reliable. Everyone can have a great group now and then, but not 5x5 over 5 7-minute sessions.
