  • 24" Stoner 1/8 Grendel reloading data

Hello all just received my barrel from Midway usa about 2 weeks ago and since putting the rifle together I have been searching for reloading data for this wonderful cartridge. I have ordered some projectiles from Midway but find it confusing with the flurry of data out there and none I have found for the 24" barrel. I have some factory loads but really want to put this round to the test and let it stretch its legs. I am looking for anyone who has experience with the 24" barrel and loads they have tried thank you.

I'll be interested in these replies as well. There is a handy Grendel reloading book the guys put together on here that should help start the process.

Hey 6.5City yeah I am curious with the length of the barrel what powder/primer combo to use I ordered a variety of rounds to try out, Barnes Tipped Triple-Shock X 120Gn Spitzer Boat Tail Lead-Free, Hornady InterLock 123Gn SST Boat Tail, Hornady A-Max 120Gn Boat Tail, Nosler Ballistic Tip Hunting Bullets 140 Grain Spitzer, Nosler AccuBond Bullets 130 Grain Bonded Spitzer Boat Tail. I have been looking at IMR 8208 XBR powder its 85 in the burn rate chart but a few other places I have looked have said it would work fine in a Grendel, problem is everything is in short supply at the moment. I am hoping that by summer things get back to some sort of normal.

Check out BWild97's data located on this thread http://www.65grendel.com/forum/showt...)-lots-of-pics. He used a 24" barrel in his testing.

If I were you Id order the reloading handbook from LRRPF52. Until you get it, look on the hodgon website,AA, Lapua, and western powders. I know the hodgon data is for a 24" barrel. You can take similar bullet weights to what you have and find a starting load. Be sure to start low and work up.

Don't forget to do barrel break in

I have that combination and Hornady factory loads with 123 amax are very hard to beat.
Only a very few handloads will exceed the Hornady load. Krieger site has detailed description of proper barrel break in. Good luck
Browse answers to the most common questions we get. Krieger Barrels manufactures custom, single-point cut-rifled barrels for bolt action, AR-15, AR-10, M1 Garand, M14, M1903 along with a variety of services.

Recon - adding to ricsmall's post, a good place to start is the load data on the Alexander Arms site which gives a variety of powders: http://www.alexanderarms.com/images/..._reloading.pdf

I have a 24" Satern barrel that really likes TAC, AA2520, and IMR 8208XBR for 120 - 123 gr projos. Most accurate for me is TAC at about 28.0 gr. Start at 27.0 and work up.

And yes, there is a nice reloading handbook available that covers many of the commercial sources of load data in addition to a chapter on watching for signs of excessive pressure as your work up. http://www.ar15buildbox.com/Sitemap.html

              +1 on Bwild97's data. Here's another thread from PA_Allen shooting a 20" that may be helpful: http://www.65grendel.com/forum/showt...th-chrono-data

BTW - the handbook as a section on converting velocity data between different barrel lengths.

The biggest thing to consider with those barrels is that your maximum Cartridge Overall Length will typically be a tad shorter than published loads for a SAAMI Grendel chamber. The 120gr A-MAX is limited on seating depth, which is why Hornady made the 123gr A-MAX, with its more secant ogive and higher BC than the 120gr A-MAX. The 140gr Nosler BT is quite long for the Grendel, and even more so for a variant chamber with limited seating depths. Bwild97 has been able to get some impressive results with 140gr pills and CFE loaded long, but he has a SAAMI Grendel chamber that allows over 2.300" with certain bullets, using modified mags.

The 120gr Barnes works, as do the 123gr SST's of course. Make sure you use .3gr increments in your charge weights until you get within 1.0-1.5gr of max load, at which point using .2gr increments is recommended. Having the 6.5 Grendel Reloading Handbook on your bench is a great asset.

I have a 24 inch Lilja and so far have only been able to use Accurate 2520 because that is the only powder I have at the moment and Sierra Match King 123, I will get some of my data once I get home and update this post, I am waiting on some CFE223, and I have plenty of Nosler Comp 123's, Nosler 120 Ballistic Tip, and Hornady 123 SST, but no data on them yet
I will be loading all of those in AA stamped Lapua and Lapua brass with CCI 450 small rifle magnum primers, the data on the SMK's will be Wolf brass

123 SMK 29.7 grains Accurate 2520 is very good in my 24 inch Lilja with Federal 210 large rifle primers

Also here is the suggested barrel break in page that came with my Precision Firearms 24 inch Lilja upper and I did follow it to the letter after the first 20 or so rounds I have no more copper showing up in the barrel

After reading about Hornady's 123 gr. A-Max I bought every box in the local g-shops, 50 brass from Bruno's and ordered dies in November (Hornady New Demension) and finally got forestor micro-seat and size dies in mail 2 weeks ago. received my copy of 6.5 Grendel reloading handbook 2 weeks ago and could not find loads for Hornady 123 gr. A-Max!!!! What gives !!!! After all this hype and then no loads?????? Maybe I'm too old to read and missed it somewhere. If so could someone tell me what page to go to?

The 123gr A-MAX is covered in Hornady's 8th & 9th Editions. We asked them several times for permission to publish their Grendel data, but were unable to receive that usage agreement so far. In Hornady's 8th Edition, A2520 gave the best velocity, and the 9th Edition has CFE data as well, which also gave the highest velocity.

The 8th Edition used a 14.5" barrel for their testing, while the 9th shows 18" data.

The best powders in the 8th Edition are:
                        TAC (25.5gr-27.9gr)
                        A2460 (25.7gr-28.0gr)
                        A2520 (26.1gr-29.3gr)
                        Varget (26.5gr-28.8gr)
                        RL-15 (26.7gr-29.0gr)
                        BL-C2 (27.7gr-30.0gr)

                        Max loads listed in red.

That's using Hornady Brass, Winchester Small Rifle Primer, 2.245" C.O.L.

The max load of A2520 produced 2350fps from the 14.5" barrel in the 8th Edition, which is a very nice load out to 600yds, even in 20mph winds.

In the 9th Edition, they were able to get 2500fps with the 123gr A-MAX with CFE from the 18" barrel.

I just shot a bunch of 123gr A-MAX over 31.0gr of CFE this weekend from my 16" out to 600yds, in 17F. I used new Lapua cases, Rem 7 1/2 BR primers, 2.260" C.O.L.

You need to do your own load development with that variant chamber from AR-Stoner anyway, as I doubt you will be able to load to 2.260". Do a chamber COL check with your a dummy round loaded with the 123gr A-MAX to see what your max COL will be.

I would run a pressure/accuracy ladder if I were in your shoes.
