18 inch Grendel changed over to bolt action

So, I decided to resurrect the bolt-action format for my 18" Rainier barrelled AR in 6.5 Grr, swapping out the upper and bcg to a BCA bolt action upper/bcg I had picked up a few weeks ago. Originally I had it set this way when that new upper came in, but had results that left me scratching my head (thread/post about this somewhere lol) so discontinued it while I pondered.
Conclusion I came to was that the increased MV I was seeing, around 50 to up towards 100 fps in some cases, for loads that I was positive were under 52 ksi... I'm chalking it up to that increase from gas not escaping back to cycle the bcg and just pushing the bullet on down the pipe.
Makes me also think that the mfrs that test their ammo in a "test barrel" are using a bolt-action style vice AR. I think Hornady does it with an AR, maybe AA, but hodgdon et... thinking straigh pipe.

Today I revisited all of this, with some more testing, and the results did show, again, increases in MV over what the AR was doing.
120 Tgk, load with 27.2 ArComp, in the AR 2436, as a bolt action 2476.
115 Barnes Tac-mle, 27,4 Ar Comp, in the AR 2445, in bolt 2504.
120 Pro hunter, 30.7 CFE, in AR 2453, in bolt 2487.
129 SST, 27 gr Ar comp, AR was 2346, in bolt 2421.
No brass/no primers looked over-pressure, no swipes, no shiny spots, no sticky bolt lift. Brass looked good. It should have b/c I know these loads from the ARs.

These are all candidates for a hunting load in this barrel.

I'm trying to find a good niche for this barrel, but don't need it in AR now that I'm working on a 16" (for short/light, 125 yds and under) and already have the 20 nailed down. So maybe this will be a good spot for it.

Has anyone else done anything on this? Interesting also b/c it's the same barrel as AR, and now in bolt.

Sounds about right to me. When I have worked up loads with same components and seating depth for my bolt grendels that I use in my ar grendels. I have seen higher fps in the bolt grendel at the same charges, same seating depth, same barrel length.

I don't have any written data points at hand but my memory is saying in the 50/75 fps range difference.

As to what company's use to test with. My understanding is unless they label it as (AR) then it was either in a bolt action or a locking breach pressure test barrel.

I use to have some pics of BPI's test setup for rifles. It was a barrel mounted into a locking breach, single shot, all the pressure testing equipment was mounted straight to the apparatus. Their shotgun setup looking almost identical.

So sitting here drinking my coffee after a unsuccessful hog hunt last night and loading some more tss buckshot loads. I grabbed my log book for my shotgun hand loads because I know I have data in it for my buckshot load in a single shot and semi auto shotgun.

        H&R 12 gauge 28 inch barrel.
        2 3/4 inch hull
12 pellet-398.4 grains of number 4 tss buckshot
        40 grains of longshot powder
Average fps for 20 shots is 1647 fps

        Beretta al390 semi auto
        28 inch barrel
        Same load
Average fps for 20 shots is 1621 fps.

I know I have some data for my grendels to support this but I haven't dug it out to confirm.

I'm going to try to dial in a couple loads for it.
          Thanks.

It’s more likely that temperature changes in summer are the factor in increased MV.

There have been tests done with gas shut off or no port vs gas-operated with no real difference between the two.

My 22” Howa bolt gun averaged only 17fps faster than my 18” LaRue AR-15 with the same lot of Hornady 123gr American Gunner.

I’ve also chrono’d ammo that shot 2452fps avg one day from my original 16” Grendel, then 2522fps on a hot day.

I certainly can't rule that out. Will do some more MV testing in a couple days. I don't need all of the MV I got so will download a bit and also include those loads too.

I don't normally compare one barrel to the other, 16, 18, 20 or 22, as I work on each to get a low-SD load, regardless of what the other guys' are shooting... so can't comment much on same load, different gun/barrels.
