Tried cutting the threads out of a SS A2 last week and tapping it to 9/16-24 and didn't get past cutting the threads. The one I was trying to open up were apparently hardened. Taps are available at Midway. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/421...rendel-9-16-24

It ruined a carbide bit on my Machinists lathe but live and learn as noted by wheelgunner. The S.S. A-2 flash hider I tried was too hard to do anything with, a file wouldn't even scratch it. So I got a different comp from Brownells again and had him open up the port and blend the comp to the barrel. Turned out just fine. I did 5 in about an hour so that averages out to $10 each. I use the Shrewd style again because I find them effective. On and 18" barrel, it gives them a 20" look and good fit for a XL Handguard. http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts...prod13070.aspx.

Also if the 1/2 threads are cut out it will leave you enough to thread for the 9/16-24. I also got a 9/16-24 to 5/8-24 reducer so 5/8-24 comps can be used on the end of a Grendel. I had the wrench end cut off on that too and am trying to get Advance Armament to make a butt load of them for distribution. I want them made without the hex nut part so it can be threaded right onto the the barrel permanently or until more 9/16-24 Comps are available http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts...prod54364.aspx

And I have a company in the process of making Nuzzle treatments for the Grendel in the Punisher, A-2 Flash Hiders and 3 port Compensator in 9/16-24. I should have prototype sample here in a week or so. They are also making the 9/16-24 Crush washers in SS so you don't have to "time" each Comp and A-2 to your barrel. It will be at least a month till they are ready and once they are, I'll let people know.

Till then, try something, there are the items above to get something working. Now that you read all that, here are some in stock.

With probably more shooters of 9/16x24 threaded barrels here than any other forum, one or more of us likely has an A2 Grendel flash hider in a parts box somewhere. A want-to-buy ad might have been the most economical route. But what's done is done...

I had a machine shop attempt to change a comp with 14x1mm LH threads to 5/8x24 RH. The hardened steel ruined the tap, so the experiment didn't work out. Thus, it might depend upon the hardness of the flash hider and / or the quality of the tap.

Good luck. Hope you get the results you seek.

Drifter Dang case hardened steel..may prove that my $8 AR 1/2-24 flash hider might not work....I guess there is no way to tell of its case hardened before the experiment? You got any if your $10 investment experiments for sale if mine fails? Thanks for the detailed post. I enjoyed reading it! And thanks for links!

Tedward if I could have got that pretty 45 dollar stainless flash hider from precision firearms you posted the link to I wouldn't be experimenting!

I think Mark said they have some more in the works, send him an e-mail and he can give you an ETA probably. Well he's most likely getting ready for Shot Show so just drop an e-mail to there web site.

If you want to know if your muzzle device is hardened or not try cutting it with a good file.

                        Hydrotech -

I have another thread started on here regarding opening up the threads on existing 1/2 x 28 muzzle brakes.

I know my mechanical limitations so I am not looking to setup shop in the garage to do it but rather I am looking for a source to have it done with that isn't a local machine shop where you blindly submit to their will.

Anyhow IF you are successful with your A2 "experiment" you will have certainly learned some tips to share with the rest of us.

Some of the brakes are sophisticated pieces of alloy and what applies to rethreading an A2 may not work for other styles so go careful with wielding the sword of success afterwards

I am glad that I read this thread before ordering by muzzle brake as originally I was contemplating a Melonite treated model that likely would have made the work very hard on the machinery and machinist.

                        Goodluck and keep us posted!

The A2 I have is a cheap $8 one. I have a buddy that does a little machine work and has a lathe. He does t think its case hardened. Tap cane in today so in hoping he can tap and thread it tomorrow...if so I will have a report and pics

I bet it would be hard to thread s Melonie one but I don't know

If it works ill have 26 bucks in the flash hider and tap.

Well folks that worked out just fine! Very easy! buy 1 cheap flash hider for under 10 bucks and a 9/16-24 HSS tap and you can make your own flash hider Grendel flash hider for about 25 bucks...if you have a friend with a lathe or maybe a drill press. Maybe I'll make a few more to keep on hand. Let me see if I can figure out how to post pics.
